dene community school of technology

As part of our consultancy work for Easington & Seaham Education Action Zone we were asked to produce a new identity for Dene School in Peterlee. Although facing a number of difficulties the school was committed to improvement and had won Specialist Status in Technology.

The existing identity was applied inconsistently and no longer reflected the direction the school was taking. The school wanted to keep their main colours, yellow and blue but that was the only stipulation. Following a visit to the school we found that the technology area used red in its decoration. From these starting points a number of influences and ideas played a part in the creation of the new identity. Firstly, we looked at the local and surrounding areas. The Millennium Bridge in nearby Gateshead has become a symbol of rising aspirations and new beginnings, so after photographing the bridge we used the negative space formed by its arc to design a ‘D’ shape. Using this basic shape we developed a triple version in the school colours of yellow and blue together with a red element to represent technology. Art is another strong subject at the school and the final triple visual element has echoes of the work of Sir Terry Frost the British contemporary artist so that the final identity integrates elements of art, technology and design.

“Homer Creative played a key role in the redefining of our school when they were commissioned for a make over of our corporate image.”

Allan Fuller, Headteacher, Dene Community School of Technology (now Head of Joseph Swan School in Gateshead)
