self portrait
Photographic self portrait work is something we have been involved in for many years starting with the original Handsworth Self Portraits in 1979.
These were a ground breaking set of images that challenged the visual stereotypes of Handsworth as being a place with only problems. By allowing participants the opportunity to choose the moment when the picture is taken with a long cable release and by using a plain backdrop the project allowed the people of Handsworth to be seen as a diverse and vibrant community.
Recently we have updated the technique with modern digital technology – we now use a digital camera hooked up to a computer and a portable lab quality printer. This allows us to create a much more involving atmosphere – people can see their pictures almost immediately on screen and then have a print to take away within minutes.
The new project aims to build up a representative picture of all the communities and people of Birmingham. To do this we are collaborating with Pete James, Head of Photographs at Birmingham Central Library, Graham Peet, Community Artist and James Yarker of the award winning and internationally acclaimed theatre group Stan’s Cafe.
We are also offering this technique to schools to enhance Open Days and other events in your community outreach programme. Used in schools it can promote positive images of students and contribute to developing a clear school culture and ethos.

“As a tool for engagement it has an immediacy which beats anything else I’ve been involved with.”
